Policy Agenda 2024

Californians for Justice is excited to introduce our 2024 Policy Agenda on Youth Power and School Transformation! Our Policy Agenda highlights this year’s statewide legislative and budget priorities that we are tracking and supporting for their alignment with our youth-led priorities. Specifically, we believe these pieces will advance our vision of relationship-centered, racially-just schools in California and move us closer towards our goal of Black liberation in schools and communities. This year, our priorities include protecting funding for community schools, facilitating the allocation of resources and funding for students of color, and targeting the school-to-prison pipeline by limiting the scope and reach of law enforcement on school campuses.

As a multi-racial organization fighting for liberation in our schools, we understand this work must begin with reparations for Black students and families. We want to celebrate the education recommendations uplifted by the CA Reparations Taskforce in their June 2022 Report and the ongoing efforts by partners working to make systemic and structural changes a reality. Parallel to the work of the statewide taskforce, CFJ youth leaders worked last year to identify possibilities for cultural and material reparations in our education system across our regions of Long Beach, Fresno, San Jose and Oakland.

We offer our Policy Agenda as an opportunity to uplift and support bills that align with the reparations priorities youth identified, and to work towards reimagining our schools as liberating spaces of joy, healing, opportunity, learning, celebration, and belonging.

This year, CFJ is fighting for the following budget & legislative priorities with our youth leaders and staff through our legislative advocacy at the Capitol, including during our upcoming Youth Power Capitol Day:

In addition to the policy priorities listed above, CFJ’s 2024 Policy Agenda package includes a secondary tier of legislation we are aligned with and are investing advocacy efforts into. Notable bills that we are tracking, sending letters of support for, and giving public comment for include:
