Organization Overview

Californians for Justice is a statewide, youth-powered organization fighting to improve the lives of people of color, immigrants, low-income families, LGBQiA2S+/TGNC youth and other marginalized communities. Through organizing in schools and in their neighborhoods, youth who join Californians for Justice become leaders in their own communities. They deepen their knowledge on issues like systemic racism, gender and sexuality, and education inequity, and organize and activate their peers to take action.

CFJ is the only grassroots, youth-powered organization in California that organizes students to have a voice in both local and statewide education policy. Our campaign and policy reform goals include adequate and equitable school funding, increased access and success in K-12 and higher education, and creating Relationship Centered Schools – schools that invest in youth voice, in staff, and in creating space for youth and adults to build positive relationships with one another. CFJ currently has four regional offices in Fresno, Long Beach, San Jose and Oakland, 42 full-time equivalent staff and a budget of $5.5 million.

Position Overview

Do you have 6+ years of nonprofit human resources & operations under your belt and want to work at a nonprofit that centers social & racial justice? We are seeking a highly competent and values-based People & Operations Director team member who excels at both systems and people, and who centers racial justice values in their operations decisions. The People & Operations Director will be a part of a 7-person operations team that handles finance, human resources, and administration for CFJ and our fiscally sponsored project, Youth Organize! California. The role will oversee all human resources and nonprofit operations. 

The position reports to the Senior People & Operations Director, supervises the People & Operations Coordinator, and works closely with the People & Operations Manager. The position is full-time and exempt. In all duties and responsibilities, this position exercises discretion and independent judgment. The position can be based in any of CFJ’s four offices – Fresno, Long Beach, Oakland or San Jose. (We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19.) 


Essential Responsibilities                                                     

Human Resources (55%)

  • Develop and implement strategies for human resource management at CFJ. Continually improve HR practices, including aligning processes with racial justice values
  • Manage performance management at CFJ, including annual performance reviews,  individual goal-setting, professional development, and providing coaching to staff and managers to ensure quality and consistency and solve personnel issues
  • Develop, implement, and administer retirement and benefits programs to ensure competitive positioning, cost effectiveness and internal equity among employees. Serve as primary contact with TPAs and plan providers. Ensure compliance with ERISA, ACA, and other relevant legislation
  • Maintain and improve personnel policies and informal personnel practices
  • Supervise the work of the People & Operations Coordinator on HR administration, including overseeing payroll, benefits, 401k, EAP, onboarding and offboarding, transitions, and overseeing organizational processes including annual goal-setting, trimester planning, and staff retreats 
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of labor law and assure organizational compliance Conduct ongoing evaluation of all human resources practices, policies and programs to manage organizational risks
  • Support the Senior Operations Director on other human resource matters as needed


Organizational Culture (15%)

  • Partner with the Senior Operations Director to cultivate and maintain an organizational culture that reflects CFJ’s deep commitment to our racial justice values; support a learning culture that engenders knowledge sharing, feedback, and continuous growth
  • Identify and implement programs to foster an open, reflective, and inclusive culture
  • Lead and implement initiatives on best practices in organizational management, performance management, and professional development


Nonprofit Infrastructure and Technology (20%) 

Manage all nonprofit infrastructure and technology systems for CFJ’s four regional offices. 

  • Supervise the work of the People & Operations Coordinator on infrastructure and technology for CFJ’s four regional offices, including office management & office moves, equipment maintenance, and email & document systems
  • Oversee technology planning, including assessing current and future technology to ensure that they meet the needs of staff and the organization
  • Ensure organizational compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws, including tax and nonprofit requirements, political limitations, and other legal issues


Organization-wide responsibilities (10%)

  • Participate in CFJ grassroots fundraising campaigns and events
  • Participate in occasional organization-wide campaign events
  • Participate in cross-department committees and teams

  • Other duties as needed

Essential Qualifications

  • At least 6 years of experience in a range of nonprofit human resource functions, including at least some of the following areas: performance management, professional development, organizational development, payroll & benefits, hiring & orientation, personnel policies, and salary ranges
  • At least 3 years of experience supporting nonprofit operations, including at least some of the following areas: office management & moves, technology systems, and legal compliance
  • At least 4 years of direct supervision experience
  • Ability to coach staff & managers on performance challenges
  • Familiarity with key federal and state labor and payroll laws
  • Technology knowledge and experience working with various platforms and tools including Google Suite, Slack, Zoom, CultureAmp, HRIS systems like Paychex Flex and Gusto, etc.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Google Spreadsheets
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work and support people from a variety of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, sexual, and gender backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to set up processes, systems, and workflows, ensure adherence and follow-up, and continually improve them
  • Experience in administering complex policies and procedures 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Good judgment to manage sensitive and confidential matters
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy 
  • Self-starting and proactive 
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a complex work plan with ever-changing details. Excellent time management skills
  • Strong analytical and research skills; ability to research, learn, and decide how to approach new HR and technology issues
  • Strong commitment to social justice, racial justice, and youth empowerment


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with G Suite (formerly Google Apps)
  • Proficiency with Mac computers
  • Experience with the nonprofit fiscal sponsorship model 
  • Experience tracking and reporting 501(c)(3) lobbying activities 


Work Environment

The position can be located in any one of CFJ’s four regional offices in Fresno, Long Beach, Oakland, or San Jose.


Physical Demands

  • Able to work on a computer, including sitting at a desk, for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard.
  • Able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
  • Able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in person and be understood by others.
  • Able to hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone.
  • Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds.



$68,225-$85,100, depending on experience and qualifications, as determined by CFJ’s salary scale. CFJ provides a generous benefits package, including fully paid health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for employees working at least half-time, as well as their dependents. We also offer substantial vacation days and time off.
